Storytelling + Ecology + Furniture = Pangea Ultima
Pangea is the name given to the historic super continent that existed 250 million years ago. Plate tectonics have moved the earth’s crust and continents into the world we know today. These geologic processes are ongoing and continue - daily. North America is slowly ‘drifting’ further away form Europe and the Pacific Ocean is getting smaller everyday. In another 250 million years these ongoing geologic processes will lead to another super continent called Pangea Ultima.
Pangea Ultima is also the name of my design firm. My hope is that this work begins to reveal some of the natural systems and man-made conditions that surround us.
Integrating cartography, geology, horticulture, and furniture design; Pangea Ultima creates dynamic furnishings that tell the story of the landscapes surrounding us.
Many of these furnishing are constructed from durable materials, making them at home in the outdoors. By placing this furniture outside, these pieces become part of our exterior environment and are subject to collecting rain and snow, solar heat gain, and evaporation. These furnishings begin to tell the story of our landscapes and become barometers of the environments we inhabit.
Keith McKeown is the founder of Pangea Ultima, an environmental deign firm based in Salt Lake City, Utah. A native of Canada’s west coast, Keith received his Bachelor of Landscape Architecture from the University of British Columbia. For the past 10 years, Keith has strived to form creative solutions for complex environmental, economic and social issues through innovative designs across the West. Based in landscape architecture, Keith’s multi-disciplinary experience brings a unique blend of skills to Pangea Ultima. Keith’s previous professional experience is with a large architecture, planning and engineering firm in Boulder, Colorado and a landscape architecture and planning firm in Salt Lake City, Utah.
